Exfoliation Products
Exfoliation is key to a healthy young look. It removes dead skin cells, paves the way for new cell turnover, and reveals fresh, glowing skin ready to be moisturized.
Exfoliation products come in two forms: physical and chemical. Physical exfoliants are the best choices for men with tougher skin. They’re also great for men who use beard razors or bald head shavers as they pass through the stubble and keep your skin fresh and clean.
Chemical exfoliants are great for men who have extra sensitive skin. They pierce through the dead skin cells into the deeper layers and encourage healthy cell regeneration.
Type of Exfoliant:
First and foremost, consider the type of exfoliant you want. More specifically, consider if you want a physical or a chemical exfoliant.
Physical Action:
Physical action exfoliants work by creating minor abrasions in the skin that pull off superficial dead skin cells. These include lotions and face scrubs that have small beads or particles meant for exfoliating. Most scrubs of this type use jojoba beans, but some homemade remedies use sugar as well.
There are also the pumice or sponge-type exfoliants that you’re supposed to rub against your skin. These are a bit more abrasive than the face scrub types, and it’s easy to get carried away with them.
Chemical Action:
Chemical action exfoliants use chemicals to remove the dead skin layer. They don’t make use of physical particulates to abrade the dead skin. But don’t get dissuaded by the chemical tag. These exfoliants are no more abrasive than physical exfoliants.
Chemical exfoliants also go much deeper than your superficial layer of dead skin cells. It makes them more effective than their physical counterparts. Going deeper helps reset your body’s exfoliating cycle. So your body naturally sheds its skin off more often.
Intended Use:
Next, consider what type of skin you have. Not all exfoliants are made equal. Some are milder, while others are strong. And some will dry out your skin, while others will retain moisture.
For Normal Skin:
These exfoliants are made for men who don’t have specific skin conditions, like dry, oily, or sensitive. These exfoliants are typically gentle physical exfoliants. But you can find some chemical ones made for normal skin as well. In chemical exfoliants, you’ll naturally find glycolic acid or certain enzymes in them that help breaks down dead skin.
For Dry Skin:
Exfoliants like these are best suited for men who have dry skin. Dryness can cause a horde of other problems, so physically exfoliating on dry skin is not the best choice. Instead, most dry skin exfoliants are chemical-based, using either glycolic acid or lactic acid.
For Oily/Combination Skin:
For men who have oily skin, try an exfoliant made for that. Salicylic acid is known to dry up your skin. So it only makes sense that this acid is the best choice for oily skin. It not only exfoliates the skin but also helps dry it out, reducing your chances of acquiring a blackhead. You may also use psychical scrubs since they’ll help remove the layer of oil on your face.
For Sensitive Skin:
If your skin is susceptible to certain acids or changes in pH, you’ll be better off with a lactic acid exfoliant. You can know your skin is sanative if you’ve had irritations or rashes from previous attempts at chemical exploitation.
Lactic acid is the mildest of the three primary acids (the other two being glycolic and salicylic). As such, it’s the perfect choice for skin sensitive to pH-change.
For Men:
Certain exfoliants, especially the physical ones, are designed just for men. These are tougher exfoliants that can pass right through stubble’s and get to the skin underneath. Stronger exfoliants also help prevent ingrown hairs, which are a pain to deal with. This type of exfoliant is especially for you if you use a shaving trimmer or head razor.
Why Should You Exfoliate?
Exfoliation means removing the layer of dead skin cells formed on your skin. While healthy individuals shed skin at an acceptable rate, some men don’t have that privilege.
You see, as we age, our body’s ability to replenish its cells weakens. As a result, our skin shedding process gets halted. Exfoliation can help with that, either temporarily or permanently.
But it’s not just for the aged. Dead skin cells end up clogging your pores and allow for blackheads to form. So acne-prone young individuals who need to look after their skin should begin an exfoliating routine.
In addition to that, exfoliants help push moisturizers and toners deeper into the skin. So you get twice the benefit from half the product.
Of course, there’s a healthy limit to exfoliation. It would be best if you exfoliated about two to three times each week. Avoid over-exfoliating as this
